Times Past

A new hard-backed book containing many of Nicholas Hardinge’s wonderfully evocative photos of the 50s and 60s is now available to buy.

These surviving images illustrate a way of life that has gone for ever. In those days, the Thames and the London Docks were seething with shipping and small craft. The Thames barge, although in decline, was still very much in evidence. The workmen, in their flat caps, all look so different
to today.

The book shows a forgotten world of ‘totters’, coopers, Covent Garden porters, and Thames sailing barges working for their living – and includes the story of one such barge owned and worked by the photographer!

A lovely book, full of amazing images – including an unusual one from the Coronation in 1953!

The photographs are available to buy at www.nicholashardinge.co.uk, or this unique book can be purchased only from the gallery, or the websites for £20
(+ postage and packing.)
