TIMES PAST

A new hard-backed book containing many of Nicholas Hardinge’s wonderfully evocative photographs of the 50s and 60s is now available to buy.

These surviving images illustrate a world that is gone forever. In those days the Thames and London docks were seething with shipping and small craft. The Thames barge, although in decline was still very much in evidence. The workmen in their flat caps all look so different to today.

The book shows a forgotten world of ‘totters’, coopers, Covent Garden porters, and Thames sailing barges working for their living – and includes the story of one such barge owned and worked by the photograher.

A lovely book, full of amazing images including an unusual one from the Coronation in 1953!

The photographs are available to buy individually at www.nicholashardinge.co.uk, or this unique book can be purchased only from the gallery, or either website for £20
(+ postage and packing.)

BACON IN MOSCOW

This funny and personal memoir is the account of an audacious attempt by James Birch, a young British curator, to mount the ground-breaking retrospective of Francis Bacon’s work at the newly refurbished Central House of Artists, Moscow
in 1988.

Side-lined by the British establishment, Birch found himself at the heart of a honey-trap and the focus for a picaresque cast of Soviet officials, attachés and politicians under the forbidding eye of the KGB as he attempted to bring an unseen western cultural icon to Russia during the time of ‘Glasnost’, just before the fall of the
Berlin Wall.
